  1. Personally I haven’t found a paint on varnish that I’ve been happy with. I’ve tried gloss, matte and semi-gloss, but to me they look polyurethaned. Instead I use two light coats of a satin spray varnish made by Golden. It’s a bit pricey, but it provides coverage without looking covered.

  2. From Ginger… Varnishing acrylic mediums, when applied with a brush “POPs” out the color on the dried acrylic If you follow the brush strokes in the painting, it enhances the artwork and does not look “glarey”. On very flat paintings where there are no visible brush strokes or the paint is very blended, spray varnish is a better choice. However, you must do it in a well-ventilated area. If spraying outside, make sure there is no wind or small flying bugs.

Spray varnishes can often clog after the second use if not cleared properly and can spit on the art and leave unsightly marks. Spray varnishes should be stored upside down after use.
